Nestling on the eastern side of the Camel Estuary on the North Cornish Coast about 5 miles from Wadebridge, lies the beautiful beach of Daymer Bay. Here, each Monday in the summer, members of Camhayle Theatre Club, led by Les Cory, walk across Daymer Bay to Brea Hill to read poetry and prose written by Sir John Betjeman.

Betjeman spent many of his holidays and later years living at Trebetherick, not far from Daymer. The Camhayle members have been reading his poetry for many years ‘ On the Hill ‘.

Over the years many locals and holiday makers alike have enjoyed sitting in the fresh air with St Enodoc Church to right, where the poet is buried, and the Camel Estuary to their left, listening to the writings of Betjeman.

Some of the Camehayle Theatre Club members, were featured reading the proem ‘ Delectable Duchy ‘ by John Betjeman on Brea Hill, in the BBC 1 ‘ Countryfile ‘ programme on 13th March 2005.

If you are anywhere in the Wadebridge area in the summer, do please come along for a most enjoyable evening. Bring a cushion to sit on, something warm to put round your shoulders and a bottle of wine or a flask of coffee to keep away the evening chills. So do come along and join us one evening.
